Nephrolithiasis (kidney stones) is a disease affecting the urinary tract. Kidney stones are small deposits that build up in the kidneys, made of calcium, phosphate and other components of foods. Between 1% and 15% of people globally are affected by kidney stones at some point in their life. They have many causes and can affect any part of urinary tract from kidneys to urinary bladder. Oft en, stones form when the urine becomes concentrated, allowing minerals to crystallize and stick together. Risk factors include high urine calcium levels, obesity, certain foods, some medications, calcium supplements, hyperparathyroidism, gout and not drinking enough fluids.

The initial presentation is oft en with renal colic – severe pain caused by stone passage – triggered by movement of a stone from the renal pelvis into the ureter, which leads to ureteral spasm and possibly obstruction oft en associated with nausea and vomiting. Lower urinary tract symptoms such as dysuria, urgency, and frequency may occur once a stone enters the ureter. Treatments of renal stones include general management and medical management. General management include dietary measures such as limiting the consumption of food rich in animal protein, food having excessive oxalate (spinach & cabbage) and increasing the fluid intake.
